Oral Cancer Awareness: A Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Examination
Oral cancer is a severe condition that can be fatal if not detected early. Key risk factors include HPV, sun exposure, tobacco, and alcohol use. In the U.S., someone dies from oral cancer every hour. Our dental practice, Triad Dental Implant Surgical Center, offers oral cancer screenings.
Early Detection is Crucial
Oral cancer often isn’t identified until it’s advanced, making regular dental checkups essential. During these visits, we conduct oral cancer exams to identify any potential issues early. Early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.
How to Perform a Self-Examination
Alongside professional screenings, you can perform a monthly self-exam at home. Here’s how:
Know the Signs
Oral cancer may appear as:
- Sores that persist for more than two weeks
- White, red, or mixed-colored patches
- Firm, raised lumps or growths
- Craters or indented areas in the tissues
- Lesions with unclear or irregular edges
- Changes to the lip’s edge, making it blend with the surrounding skin
Examine Your Tongue
Check both sides and underneath your tongue for any abnormalities. Use a clean piece of gauze to help move your tongue if needed. Also, inspect the inside of your lips and use a mirror with good lighting to view the inside of your cheeks, the floor of your mouth, and the roof of your mouth.
Look for Abnormalities
If you find any lesions or areas that look different from the surrounding tissue, compare them to the other side of your mouth. If they don’t match, consult with our dentist during your next visit.
Check Your Neck and Swallowing
If you have trouble swallowing or notice any lumps or swelling in your throat or neck, inform your dentist or physician.
